We just hit our one year mark living in Victoria, BC and so far I’m in love with this island! I know that rainy winters aren’t for everyone, but I’ll take it over the cold any day.
As much as I’m loving life here, it was much more of an adjustment moving back to Canada than I had ever imagined. After spending three and a half years immersed in a new culture and way of life, we definitely had some growing pains settling into a new pace of life, but seem to have finally found our footing. The summer weather definitely helps!
While living abroad, photographing families was the biggest way I found connection and normalcy. It was an incredible outlet for meeting new people and beyond rewarding to capture families — often multiple times — and seeing their children growing up in front of my lens.
Saying goodbye to so many wonderful families I had the privilege of documenting during my time in the middle east was not easy. So when I woke up to a message from Dariela a few months ago, my day became instantly brighter. I had first met Dariela in Saudi last Spring when she brought her son to a children’s portrait day I was hosting. We had been trying to find a good time to capture her entire family together in Saudi Arabia, but her daughters lived in Canada for school so the timings hadn’t worked out before we moved.
Fast forward to one year later and Dariela was contacting me to share the good news: her family would be in Victoria for her younger daughter’s graduation from Brentwood College School and they wanted to celebrate this special time with a family photo session.
Dariela and her family love to spend their weekends together at the beach so we met up for their family photos at Mount Doug Beach for some beautiful ocean views and sand. Once we hit golden hour, we headed to Mount Doug lookout for a second backdrop and I’m so glad we did. The wind was crazy and bitingly cold for an otherwise warm day, but it was an amazing way to finish off their session. Their son loved exploring the mountain and managed to run to the the summit from the location we were using for pictures in the blink of an eye!
