Headshot Resources: Top 3 Tips for a Perfect Professional Headshot Session

Tips for a Smooth Headshot Session | Victoria BC Professional Portrait Photographer

As a business owner, it’s important to have a professional headshot or business portrait that you can use on your website, social media, and printed materials including conference bios, annual reports, and so much more. With the internet having such a wide reach, having an image that represents you in the most flattering and impactful way is critical to helping you stand out.

I’ve put together a list of my top three tips to achieve the perfect headshot:

1. Wear An Outfit that Matches Your Brand

When you meet with a client, what is your go-to outfit? Jeans with a blazer, a maxi dress, jeans and a dress shirt, or do you love a good business suit? Clients are looking at your headshot to learn more about you and the person they want to work with, so headshot clothing should be similar to your outfit of choice when meeting with your clients and business partners to create an immediate sense of familiarity and recognition for your client.

2. Choose a Simple Backdrop

A professional headshot (or portrait) is all about you, so keeping the background/backdrop clean and simple is key. Using a neutral or solid backdrop or muted office background/workspace will help maintain the focus on you while avoiding any background distractions.

3. Get to Know Your Photographer

Every photographer has a different style and approach so it’s important that your photographer’s headshot images match the type of images you want to create.

Before hiring your headshot photographer, be sure to review their headshot portfolio (you can view my featured portfolio here) to ensure their work matches the look of images you are wanting to create. Of course I would love to You can also learn a bit more about who they are and their personality by taking a look at their bio page.
